  When Persistent Pain Begins to Take a Mental Toll Everybody hurts at some point and often for good reason. Pain is one of the ways your body tells you that something is wrong, that you need to seek medical attention. In many instances, the cause of your pain is clear and the pain goes away after proper treatment. But that’s not always the case. Your discomfort or pain may persist long after the initial source of the hurt has been effectively addressed. As a general rule, if the same pain stays with you for more than about three months, and the original cause of the pain has been remedied, you have a condition known as “ chronic pain .” In about one of every four cases of people who experience chronic pain, the condition will develop into what is known as chronic pain syndrome, or CPS.   Biofeedback Therapy Biofeedback is the process of making patients aware of automated bodily functions in order to promote self-control of these functions. Biofeedback can be a cognitive practice that does not require the use of assistive devices or an interactive treatment that uses wearable devices or computers to provide feedback of the body’s various functions. As the patient becomes more aware of certain bodily functions, he or she can generate more cognitive efforts toward increasing control of the functions that may be creating pain, discomfort, or other medical conditions/impairments.   Diagnosis and Treatment According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), anywhere from  two to four million Americans suffer a traumatic brain injury every year , about one-tenth of them occurring during sports or recreational activities. For athletes under the age of 20, approximately one in every five traumatic brain injuries is sports-related. A traumatic brain injury (TBI) may result from a blunt-force blow to the head, a penetrating injury, or an event in which the head moves violently back and forth (typically referred to as whiplash). A mild TBI, customarily referred to as a concussion, can have symptoms that last for a few days; typically, the person will see full recovery within a week or two. Moderate-to-severe TBI can cause permanent or long-term cognitive dysfunction, loss of motor skills, difficulty with speech, or even death.
